Just as famous these days for the traffic around them, the powerfully symbolic monuments of the Arc de Triomphe and Place de la Concorde top and tail the Champs-Élysées. In between, along it’s 1.91 kilometres, you can dine in Fouquets or McDonalds and buy that bag in Louis Vuitton or from a street vendor.
Venture off the avenue and you will find the Grand and Petit Palais at Place de la Concorde. The pocket of streets between the Champs-Élysées and avenues George V and Montaigne is known as the golden triangle and boasts a whose-who of globally renowned hotels and luxurious boutiques to indulge customers.
Running parallel with and just to the north of the Champs-Élysées, is rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, one of the most luxurious and fashionable streets in the world - address for the Élysée Palace, official residence of the president of the French Republic, the residences of the United States and Canadian Ambassadors to France, the Embassy of the United Kingdom, numerous art galleries and virtually every major French and many international fashion houses including Hermès, Chanel, Givenchy, Louboutin, Lanvin and Yves Saint Laurent.
Parisians are undivided in their opinion that living or staying west of the Arc de Triomphe, either side of Avenue de la Grande Armée, is as good as it gets for work life balance - great family apartments, great schools and chic shops and restaurants.
